Kushiro Marsh is Japan's largest wetland, stretching inland from the Pacific Ocean to the eastern side of Hokkaido. Countless plants, wild animals, and wild insects live in this magnificent unspoiled nature, and the red-crowned crane which is designated as a special natural monument of the country also migrates here.
You can enjoy such a magnificent nature on the "SL Fuyu-no-Shitsugen Train". On this 3 days tour, you can enjoy 3 different activities in the world of white snow. Forget your daily life in the cold air and pure white snow and play to your heart's content!

ACCOMMODATION
THE GEEK
This guesthouse surrounded by nature is limited to use for a maximum of four groups a day.
The word "geek" means someone who is interested in a subject that they love. It is a place where every kind of nerds gather; with wide ranging interests such as trains, canoeing, horse trekking, camping, fishing, bird watching etc.
It is located on top of a hill overlooking the local station the Toro station. Toro station is where Hokkaido's only SL train runs, and on the other side of the railroad tracks you can see the infinite Kushiro Marshland. THE GEEK is such an irreplaceable place where you can appreciate the great nature.
You could see the magnificent Kushiro Marsh over the local train tracks from your room window. Admire the snowy world from the moment you wake up in the morning.
Dining
Dinner on the day of arrival and daily breakfast is made by the owner. Enjoy your meals at the shared living room while chatting with the owner as he explains how to enjoy the local activities.
For an additional fee, you can also enjoy a BBQ plan with Japanese Wagyu beef "Shibecha Hoshizora no Kuroushi" which is grown in Shibecha town, and local vegetables to make the most of the eastern part of the Hokkaido island. Be sure to try out the charcoal grilled hamburger steak made from black cattle beef!

Alternatively, you could head to Kushiro city (approximately 30 minutes drive away) and enjoy the Robata Grill which is originated in Kushiro.
Facilities
The rooms has a simple interior design with a view of the Kushiro Marshes from the window.
The shared living room on the first floor is available for use at any time.

Itinerary
Day 1
From various locations to Kushiro
Move to Toro by yourself. Access to the site is here>>.
Arrive at Toro THE GEEK. The owner Mr. Tatsukawa and his son will welcome you.
Dinner at THE GEEK
Dinner is prepared by the owner with the menu changing each day.
Warm food is served in the shared living room.
*An eastern Hokkaido BBQ plan could be requested at an additional fee (up to 6 people).

Day 2: Morning activity
Have a fun winter in eastern Hokkaido!
Smelt fishing (09:30-11:30, approximately 2 hours), is a winter tradition at Lake Toro.
Drill a hole in the thick, icy lake and try smelt fishing on ice! Guidance will be provided for everyone including beginners.
You can either eat the smelt that you have caught after being fried in the facility or you can take them home with you.
A set of rental equipment is included so you could come empty-handed.
*There are no heating facilities in the tent. Please wear warm clothes for this activity.
Day 2: Afternoon activity
Ride the steam locomotive "SL Fuyu-no-Shitsugen Train" across the Kushiro Marshland!
SL Fuyu-no Shitsugen Train celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2019. It is a sightseeing train operating only in winter season with two train services a day on specific dates from late January to late February each year. This train is very popular not only among railroad fans but also among travelers as it runs in the great nature of Hokkaido.

(approximately 80 minutes)
*The Arekinai River which connects Lake Toro to the Kushiro River flows gently in winter and is a fantastic world. You can sometimes see cranes and other animals.
*A limited number of winter clothes are available for rent.

Access
＜By car＞
It takes approximately 60 minutes from Kushiro Airport and approximately 30 minutes from Kushiro city.
The shortest route from Kushiro Airport: Take the Akan Exit on the Hokkaido Expressway, Route 38 towards Obihiro, Route 391 via Kushiro Outer Ring Road.
・If you can't see "THE GEEK" in your car navigation system, please enter "Toro station" (Touroeki). You will be guided from the station.
・There have been many deer-vehicle collision. Please be careful especially when driving in the morning and evening which is the time when the animals are eating.
＜By train＞
It is approximately 1 minute or 100m walk from Toro Station. Toro station is approximately 30 minutes from Kushiro station on the JR Senmou Line.
・JR Senmou Line is a local line with infrequent departures. Please check the timetable carefully.
＜By flight＞
A car rental store is located right in front of Kushiro Airport. It takes approxiately 50 minutes by car from Kushiro Airport.
Take the airport bus to Kushiro station (approximately 90 minutes), then change to the train to Toro station.
・There are only 7 round-trip train services a day, so please be careful to adjust your connecting time.

・Check-in time is at 15:00, and check-out time is at 12:00.
・Dinner service is between 18:00 and 20:00, breakfast service is between 07:00 and 08:00.
